Last month, whilst visiting relatives in Cambridgeshire, we went to Anglesey Abbey and Gardens. But what there is to see is a beautiful house which used to be a priory , wonderful gardens and a working watermill. It was designed and created in the s by the 1st Lord Fairhaven and his close friend, Major Vernon Daniels. Forming a D-shape are beech hedges which surround the garden and protect the blooms from the wind. There are five beds filled with plants chosen to flower mainly in June and July.

What Other Say:. I had a great experience with an order 2 days ago. Had originally wanted them delivered to West Hills Hospital, then the recipient was going home, unknown to us.

I was able to re-route the delivery to her home. After attempting delivery and no one there, he went back again and made the delivery. Not many florists would do this much to make sure our mom got her flowers.

Thank you so very much for your outstanding service. They put together a wonderful arrangement and really went the extra mile. Great service and product. Would definitely call them again. I walked in and was helped right away. I was guided through what I needed for the occasion. They made the most beautiful flower arrangement for me. It was reasonably priced. I love supporting local businesses and will keep coming back here.

We have been using Abbey's Flower Garden shop for several occasions, and with each time, we are pleased once again. Everything is fresh and stay that way much longer then expected. The customer service from the ladies is phenomenal! I could not be happier with the service and the beauty of the flowers that I ordered.

I called and was lucky enough to get John to take the order. He was professional and helpful. They put together a beautiful springtime arrangement and it was delivered with in 2 hours. I highly recommend Abbey's.

The Gardens of Downton Abbey

In the middle ages, one of the largest buildings in Britain stood just to the east. That building was the church of Reading Abbey. It was almost as tall as the Blade office block, at a time when other buildings in Reading were two or three storeys high at the most, and would have towered over the town and surrounding countryside. The business was set up in the Market Place, which was always full of farmers and shoppers. At this time seed merchants had a reputation for adding inferior or dead seeds to the seeds they sold. The company gradually expanded so that by the end of 19th century its premises occupied a large area between The Forbury, Market Place and Abbey Square - much of the area now occupied by Forbury Square. Martin Hope Sutton exploited the benefits of the railway and the penny post for transporting products cheaply and quickly all over Britain.

At the very heart of historical Bury St Edmunds are the Abbey Gardens, built on the site of a great Benedictine abbey and well-known for their stunning floral displays. The gardens are framed by the abbey wall that runs from the ancient Abbot's Bridge via the imposing Abbey Gate to St Edmundsbury Cathedral. They contain magnificent formal gardens, the largest of which consists of a great circle filled with flower beds set in well-kept lawns; there are also the more secluded areas, such as the Old English Rose Garden, the Water Garden and the Blind Garden, where scent is everything. Admission free. The tearoom is closed in winter. If you want to take a break, why not stay in one of our recommended hotels.

The brilliant tulip displays at Forde Abbey peak in late April. There are tulips that flower earlier than this, but head gardener at Forde Abbey Joshua Sparkes selects primarily mid- to late-flowering cultivars to allow the perennial, annual and biennial plants surrounding the bulbs to establish fresh foliage and occasionally flowers, to enrich the naturalistic feel of the spring displays. An ancient stone abbey nestled in the flood plain of the River Exe amid the mellow rolling hills of south Somerset is at the heart of this magnificent family estate of Forde Abbey. Founded by Cistercian monks around years ago, it has been a home since and is surrounded by interesting gardens landscaped first by the monks and again during the 18th century. This simple feature is a colourful manifestation of the spirit of innovation found in the garden team at Forde Abbey.

As January 5 approaches, Downton Abbey fans on this side of the pond are eagerly awaiting a US broadcast of the British drama's fourth season. We're dusting off our tea sets and revisiting questions we were left with at last season's close. Of course, readers of this magazine may have additional questions: How high will the trellised roses have climbed? What flowers will fill the garden's herbaceous borders? Will we see any new topiary or espalier designs? In the series, filmed at the grand Highclere Castle , the gardens and surrounding 1, acres of English countryside provide lush authenticity to the show's Edwardian-era ambience.
